The usual symptoms are similar to any common cold and flu and include:

fever
cough
tiredness
loss of taste or smell

Less common symptoms include:

sore throat
aches and pains
diarrhea
a rash on skin or discolouration of fingers or toes
red or irritated eyes

More serious symptoms include:

difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
loss of speech or mobility, or confusion
chest pain

It is unlikely that serious symptoms would be experienced, and the majority of children who are hospitalised with COVID-19 have other conditions, including obesity, chronic lung disease, and neurological disorders. Most people with a mild illness, including children, don’t need any specific treatment. They get better with rest, fluids, and fever-reducing medicine not unlike the treatments for a common cold or flu.

In a series of preprints published on medRxiv 1-3, a team of researchers picked through all hospital admissions and deaths reported for people younger than 18 in England. The studies found that COVID-19 caused 25 deaths in that age group between March 2020 and February 2021. This is approximately 2 in every million persons (0.0002%) under the age of 18 in England.
About half of those deaths were in individuals with an underlying complex disability with high health-care needs, such as tube feeding or assistance with breathing.

Some conditions — including obesity and cardiac or neurological conditions — were associated with a higher risk of death or intensive-care treatment, the researchers found. But the absolute increase in risk was very small, study author Rachel Harwood, a paediatric surgical registrar at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, UK, told reporters at a media briefing.

It is very difficult for parents to understand what the impact of the vaccine will be for their children without injecting them. The vaccines have been released to the public internationally through emergency authorizations that void the requirement for rigorous testing.

It is important to note that influenza has a higher mortality risk for children than COVID-19. In Australia, there has been zero COVID-19 related deaths for children aged 0-9 years out of 23,831 cases, and one death age 10-19 years out of 26,214 cases (health.gov.au).

The findings of the USA study extract below by Dr Tracy Høeg at the University of California analysed adverse reactions to Covid vaccines in US children aged 12 to 17 during the first six months of 2021 are summarised as:

There is an estimated 283 reported cases of Myocarditis as a result of COVID-19 vaccination in children aged 12-17 per million, or 0.02%
The risk of a healthy adolescent being hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 infection is 1 in 44 million, or 0.0000002%

Heart inflammation has been caused by vaccines, although this is rare. The symptoms are chest pain, shortness of breath, or an abnormal heartbeat (fast, fluttering, or pounding).

Currently, about 1,000 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis have been reported after vaccination against COVID-19 with one of the mRNA vaccines: Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna. The cases have been most common in male adolescents and young adults, occurring most often after the second dose, and usually within several days of receiving the vaccine. The majority of cases have been mild. Experts are still gathering information, but as of this writing, 79% of teens and young adults who experienced this had recovered.

There have been traditional vaccines developed for COVID-19 (Novavax and Covaxin); however these have not been supported for rapid release by regulatory bodies.

The approved COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer, Astrazeneca, Moderna) contain mRNA technology that instigates a rapid response of the immune system for release of spike proteins to combat the specific virus. This immune response generally lasts up to 12 months and has been reported to focus on the parent virus. Hence the need to have booster shots after the initial injections.

If the virus mutates once it enters the body, then the vaccination is ineffective. Different vaccines have different lengths of efficacy but so far none seem to go beyond six months. Hence, the roll-out of the boosters which are now being offered after five months from double injection.
